September 5-9, 2023, NASA on the Air (NOTA) is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the launch of the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) spacecraft with a number of Amateur Radio special event stations coordinated across the Agency’s Amateur Radio clubs for employees, the Amateur Radio community, and the public as an opportunity to highlight and commemorate this significant milestone and mission in the rich history of Ames and NASA.
LADEE was a vanguard mission for Ames demonstrating Ames’ abilities to develop and operate a small spacecraft mission and program from research concept, to design, fabrication, and testing of small spacecraft and small spacecraft sub-systems, through to life-cycle mission operations and close-out that was launched September 6, 2013 at 11:27 PM EST (Sept. 7, 2013 at 03:27 UTC) from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) on Wallops Island, Virginia.
The Ames Amateur Radio Club (AARC) station at M529 and the AARC members will be supporting this event throughout the multi-day operating period on a flexible schedule with multiple radio stations and communications modes active and invites anyone interested in participating in the special event, learning more about Amateur Radio, the Ames Amateur Radio Club (AARC), or desiring an opportunity to directly make some radio contacts under the supervision of a licensed Amateur Radio Control Operator to drop by the AARC station in the afternoons (~Noon to 3PM), or to contact Mark Allard (KD6CWM) to arrange a specific operating schedule or site visit opportunity; EM: mark.r.allard@nasa.gov, CP: 650-269-7991.
A consortium of 12 NASA centers activate their respective NASA amateur radio club stations in coordination to support a set of special Amateur Radio operating events throughout each year called NOTA (NASA On The Air). NOTA’s objective is to foster collaboration among NASA Amateur Radio stations to interact with employees, the Amateur Radio community, and the public by providing opportunities to commemorate significant milestones in NASA space history.
